Game of Thrones: Arya’s Journey

Arya’s Journey follows Arya Stark’s path through Westeros and Essos up to season four of the television show Game of Thrones. Lev Manovich would consider this a multimedia object because each of the slides of the story map consists of complex data structures called objects that appear. What is shown is a collection of items in which the user can perform various operations such as view, navigate and search. The story map can be used to read, watch and follow the steps that Arya Stark took on her journey and this multimedia object follows a narrative approach for its information instead of a natural database.

The interface of this object is a map of the fictional the Game of Thrones world that includes two continents, Westeros and Essos. The user is given access to several items to choose from or click on to learn more about the character Arya Stark and the trials and tribulations that she endures on her journey through both continents. The pre-cinematic spatial narrative also allows the user to follow a sequence of elements, which are presented at the same time. This allows the audience to have a direct following of what occurred in the plot of the television show. Lastly, the story map provides the user to click on YouTube videos to learn more about Arya Stark and to gain more insight by using the arrows to navigate within the object. The algorithm is a linear and a non-linear story that the user can view any chapter of any time and can jump from different areas instead of being restricted from linear order. The plot of the story map is that it starts in Winterfell and ends in Braavos but the user can click on any checkpoint and pick up the story from where they have clicked. Someone that created this story map on Knight Lab made this multimedia object that provides given points that the user can to explore. Also, it is handled through web structures such as Java Script, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and HTML 5.

Moreover, the narrative of this object is that it follows a singular character from a popular television show Game of Thrones from the first season up to the end of the third season. This story can be followed directly and indirectly using the arrows and clicking the various amounts of story checkpoints that are provided. The checkpoints are components that withhold responsibility for organizing this multimedia object. This linear and non-linear story does not need to be investigated beyond face value and is described as linear, literal and ordered according to the Design Dimensions. Personally, I am connected to this piece because I became a fan of the show as my friends and I would bond together just to watch every episode. The power of social media led myself to connect with other people around the world an discuss each event that occurred in every episode that aired on television.

Pop Artist: Andy Warhol

This infamous artwork, *Shot Marilyn’s,* was created by Andy Warhol in 1964.

Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola, was one of the most innovative and prolific pop artists of his time. Warhol was born August 6, 128 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who first began as a magazine and ad illustrator then became a leading artist of the 1960s Pop art movements. He expanded his talents in a variety of art forms such as filmmaking, performance art and writing. Warhol’s cultural impact allowed the controversial distinction between fine art and mainstream aesthetics. In the late 1950s, Warhol focused on the art of painting as he brought up the concept of pop art by creating paintings that focuses on mass-produced commercial goods. In 1962, he introduced the infamous painting of the Campbell’s Soup Cans by using his own blotted line technique and rubber stamps to create his art. These small canvas works of well-known consumer products caused controversy in the art world that brought pop art and him into the spotlight. Warhol is culturally and historically important because he changed the concept and ideology of being an artist by bringing creative minds to work together and produce art. Also, he dedicated his life to the genre of pop art and continues to inspire artists to impact the world with their creative minds.

While viewing the Hybrids Aesthetics and Forms page, Andy Warhol’s artwork and the video linked was so captivating and inspirational for me because he put fine art and mainstream aesthetics together that created iconic artwork. I would always notice his artwork but never knew more information on the artist. Now, that I have gained knowledge on Andy Warhol’s influence on pop art and the art world in general gives the opportunity for others to be more artistic and to obtain a variety of visual aesthetics to be different from other artists. Through Warhol’s artwork exemplifies avant-garde and prolific art that is still influencing artists till this day. Since he was the first to utilize screen-printing as a method to create artistic pieces is fascinating to me by expanding my knowledge and history of screen print art. Lastly, Andy Warhol’s impact and influences allows me to be connected to his artwork by allowing me to broaden my creative mind in pop art.

Post Modernism

This artwork, Do Women Have to Be Naked to Get Into the Met. Museum? is a framework of Post Modernism created by the Guerrilla Girls. Women artists began to create art in response to the developments in feminist theory, which gave a reaction against the ideas and values of modernism. This group consists female artists that are feminists that formed in New York City in 1985 with the mission of bringing gender and racial inequality into focus in the art community. Post Modernism is the idea that reality is not mirrored in human understanding, but rather it is constructed that the individual finds their own reality. Postmodernists believe that realities are subject to change as well. However, post modernism began in the late 20th century (1970s-1990s) became a movement and this artwork symbolized the messages that were expressed during this era. The Guerilla girls make it their duty to expose racial and sexual discrimination in the world of art while these female artists, The Guerilla Girls, protect their faces wearing by gorilla masks in public due to their messages through art that can be controversial. Furthermore, post modernism was influenced by the developments in society, economy, and culture that these female artists are trying to convey in their artwork.

As a woman, this post modernist framework really moved me personally because it took brave women who remained anonymous to expose racial and sexual discrimination through their art. These women went against the grain to use their platform to become rebellious by exposing the truth in their art. Honestly, it is not that hard to comprehend their art and the message behind the art but I respect these female artists to stick behind their purpose and does not shy away from it This group makes it their duty to create posters, books, billboards, and public appearances to expose discrimination and corruption in society. Their actions and messages that they express to the public is something that I will always respect because their rebellion is to bring reality to individuals to the forefront to face the truth on what is occurring. People in society are often blind to their own reality due to the impact not directly affecting their life but there are always artists like The Guerilla Girls to bring awareness to these issues to make people pay attention. Lastly, this artwork means everything to me because their approach to these issues is something that must always catch the attention of individuals because discrimination and corruption is our true reality.
